The Lake District has been a hub of adventure for centuries. Long gone are the top hat and petticoats adventurers of yonder past, now the Lakes welcomes those seeking a weekend of active adventure. Being centrally located in the Lake District, Low Nest is the perfect place to stay for an active weekend in the Lakes.
Friday – Arrive (after cheeky adventure)
If you’re coming up from the south, get your adventure started early by dropping into Brockhole, just outside Ambleside. From here you can take on a tree top adventure (Go Ape style) through the woods, and maybe add in their zip line to finish off the visit.
If you still have energy and it’s before checking time, then stop off at Rydal (rydal or white moss car park) and to the old caves that overlook the valley. For those who are mountain savvy then here’s an opportunity to bag your first hill of the weekend, loughrigg.
Friday night is always abuzz in Keswick, so why not head into town. There are plenty of places to eat. We always recommend booking as it can get busy!
Saturday – A Climb and SUP Adventure
Get on the water, the perfect adventure for the lakes, perfect what ever the weather. Keep it simple, and local, by heading to Derwentwater and take on a morning SUP or canoe hire. There are many companies that do this, but we recommend the Marina (it’s where we keep out watersports gear).
For Lunch, head to nearby Lingholm. Famed for hosting Beatrix Potter and helping inspire her famous stories.
Lets get vertical. The Lake District is the birthplace of climbing with crags for all levels. If the weathers too bad then you can always head indoors, so it’s the perfect afternoon activity. There are numerous companies offering introductory climbing afternoons outdoors in one of the many crags. There are also indoor climbing walls in Keswick, so there’s plenty of opportunity to climb indoors if it’s too wet to climb outside.
That evening head back into Keswick and enjoy another of the many pubs, bars and restaurants of Keswick.
Sunday – Lake and Mine
You might be feeling a little jaded, so maybe a gentle start is needed. Why not head for Buttermere and spend a couple of hours walking round this beautiful chocolate box lake over the mountain passes.
If you make it round the lake then you’ve earned a good lunch and Buttermere has many traditional farm shop cafes.
For the afternoon head up to Honister, an adventurers playground. take on the famed Via Ferrata or the Sky Bridge. But if you’re a little tired, then stop off and take in a quarry tour, learning about the history of the Lakes.
It’s your last night, and it’s a Sunday, so head out to a rustic country pub and enjoy a well earned Sunday Roast.
Monday – Bag a mountain
It’s departure day, but the holiday’s not over. Once you’ve checked out, head to the hills and bag yourself a mountain.
From Low Nest we can access all corners of the lakes within an hour, or less, and there’s something for everybody. For experienced active walkers then take on the mighty Helvellyn, Blencathra or even Scafell Pike. For those seeking an easier hill over a couple of hours then head for Walls Crag and High Rigg (both can be walked from Low Nest in a couple of hours). If you’re totally new to the mountains then we recommend a guide who can teach you to navigate and be safe in the mountains.
Conclusion
If you follow the above, then we can guarantee one thing, you will sleep well Monday night and might need a week to recover! This is also barely a scratch on the surface of what you can do. There are hundreds of mountains, thousands of crags and endless opportunities for an adventure. We are very active, so are always happy to help offer advice on the best adventure weekend int he lakes for you.
